2006 Campaign

In August 2006, the Clean Water Fund and the Ecology Center in Michigan partnered to conduct a joint campaign to educate candidates for public office on the importance of environmental health issues, as well as to generally raise the public profile of environmental health issues.

The three tested messages were:

  • Don't Wait for Washington! This message asked the state legislative candidates to agree
to take action at the state level, rather than wait for lawmakers in Washington to get rid
of toxic chemicals and bring better jobs to Michigan.

  • Help Reverse the Toxic Trend! This health message asked the candidates to support the
Healthy Michigan plan and commit to get rid of toxic chemicals that increase cancer,
birth defects, disabilities, and other health problems.

  • Win-Win! This economic message asked the candidates, for the health of children and
the economy, to work to create new jobs and get rid of toxic chemicals.

Message Frame 1

Politicians in Washington have failed to lead the way for a future of safe jobs in clean industries. We need to make the change right here in Michigan to move forward. That's why we are urging all Michigan legislators to sign on and support the Healthy Michigan plan.

Healthy Michigan can help reverse the toxic trend in our state that
endangers our health and well being. A future that leads to:

  • Michiganders taking responsibility for our own future
making us competitive in a global economy

  • Safer and healthier foods free of harmful chemicals
    and other contamination

  • Kids, parents, grandparents and their families living full
lives instead of suffering from cancer and other lethal
    and debilitating diseases

Answer the call!

Message Frame 2

Healthy Michigan’s plan provides incentives for the swift phase out of toxic chemicals from products that can cause cancer, brain and other development problems including birth defects.

With your help, Healthy Michigan can help reverse the toxic trend in our state that endangers our health and well being. A future that leads to:

  • More parents watching their children grow to their
full potential, succeeding in school without struggling
    with learning disabilities

  • Safer and healthier foods free of harmful chemicals
    and other contamination

  • Kids, parents, grandparents and their families living
full lives instead of suffering from cancer and other
    lethal and debilitating diseases

Let’s clear the air!

Message Frame 3

Healthy Michigan’s plan will promote the creation of new Michigan-based jobs using clean technologies to make safer products, while providing incentives for the swift phase out of toxic chemicals and lethal products that endanger our health.

With your help, Healthy Michigan can help reverse the toxic trend in our state and provide a Win-Win for Michigan’s economy that leads to:

  • Michigan developing new, clean technologies leading to
new jobs right here in Michigan so our families and state
    will grow safe and stronger
  • Safer and healthier foods free of harmful chemicals and
